The History Of Jamaica

Posted on 7th Aug 2013 @ 7:23 AM

The island was first inhabited by the Arawak Indians. The native that lived there were specifically referred to as the Tainos. These people were humble and weren’t generally associated with a war-like conduct. Then the island was boarded by Captain Christopher Columbus and his crews. He was an Italian citizen who was employed by the king and queen of Spain to go to India and bring back valuable items for the country. Christopher, however, made a wrong turn and ended up in the New World. In the year 1494, he arrived in Jamaica. The Tainos believed that the Spaniards were gods. The Spaniards took this to their advantage. They worked the Tainos as slaves to cultivate sugarcane. They gave them diseases and some Taino mothers committed infanticide. When the Tainos were finally overworked and they all died out, The Spaniards needed a new source of workers. That was when they turned to Africa. The climate in Africa was similar to that in Jamaica and so the Africans were the perfect fit. The Africans were under slavery on the island. Their work however provided great income for Spain. The other European countries envied Spain. One such country was England. The British came to the island in 1655 and fought the Spaniards for the island and won. They too continued the slave trade with Africa. Some of these Africans were tired of their bondage and so ran away to the mountains. These slaves were called maroons. Those slaves who didn’t get the opportunity to escape yearned for it too. Rebellions broke out all over the island until they finally got their emancipation in 1838
